DUNHAM APPLES WASSAIL
Join us for a magical evening at Dunham Apples as we host our annual Wassail event in 2026. Steeped in ancient tradition, the Wassail is a festive celebration aimed at blessing our orchard for a bountiful harvest in the coming year. Set against the backdrop of our picturesque 20-acre orchard at Boundary Farm, this unique event offers a perfect blend of history, music, and community spirit.
WHAT IS THE WASSAIL?
The Wassail is a centuries-old tradition that traces its roots back to pre-Christian Britain. Historically, communities would gather during the Yuletide season to bless the orchards, ensuring a fruitful crop for the coming year. This ritual involved singing, toasting, and pouring a special cider mix around the base of the apple trees, all while making a joyful noise to ward off evil spirits.

At Dunham Apples, we continue this tradition with our own special twist. Our Wassail is more than just a ritual; it’s a celebration of our heritage, our community, and, of course, our beloved apple trees. The evening features the lively tunes of the Bollin Morris and the Neezzupp Ceilidh Band, bringing traditional music and dance to the orchard.
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
Torch-lit Procession: As dusk falls, join us for a torch-lit procession through the orchard, leading up to the ceremonial blessing of the trees. This atmospheric walk, accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of drums and song, is a highlight of the evening.
The Wassail Toast: Gather around as we raise our glasses and perform the traditional Wassail toast. Enjoy a warming cup of our own Dunham Press Cider or Apple Juice as we chant the Wassail song, invoking the ancient blessing, “Waes Hael!” (meaning “Be Whole”) to ensure a prosperous harvest.
Family-Friendly Fun: The Wassail is a family-friendly event with something for everyone. Kids can enjoy the spectacle of the procession, while adults can relax with a glass of mulled cider by the bonfire. There’s even a chance for the little ones to help “wake up” the apple trees with their noisemakers.
Supporting a Great Cause: This year, we’re proud to support the Teenage Cancer Trust. A portion of the proceeds from the event will be donated to this important charity, helping to make a difference in the lives of young people with cancer.
